How to Launch a Career in Healthcare Administration

One of the healthcare industry’s most appealing career paths is not behind a stethoscope, but instead behind a desk in the role of a healthcare administrator.

According to Fred Decker at Chron.com, the most straightforward way for millennials to break into this exciting area of healthcare is to pursue a degree in healthcare management or administration. Many schools offer bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in healthcare administration. These programs prepare students to successfully manage healthcare organizations by giving them education in areas like:

  • Organizational behavior
  • Strategic planning
  • Budgeting
  • Human resources management
  • Economics
  • Statistics

For those already enrolled in schools that do not offer healthcare administration programs, it is possible to land a job as a healthcare administrator with a MBA that has an emphasis in public health or health services administration.

Another path to healthcare administration is to start in a clinical role like a nurse or physician assistant and get promoted into a management role. Decker says, “People with the ambition to continue rising in the field return to school, earning degrees in business, management or health-care administration. This combination of academic training and hands-on experience can make them outstanding administrators.”
