4 Steps to Becoming a Healthcare Administrator

With a median salary of $64,840 per year, healthcare administrators make an attractive living. That’s one of the reasons millennials are taking a closer look at getting into the field. But, what exactly does it take to become a healthcare administrator?

According to Study.com, there are 4 steps you should take to land a job in healthcare administration:

  1. Earn a Bachelor’s Degree: To stand out in this competitive field, at a minimum, you need a bachelor’s degree. Give yourself an edge by selecting a school that has an accredited program in healthcare administration, health services, long-term care administration, public administration or a similar area.
  2. Get a Master’s Degree: Most management positions in healthcare administration require you to have a master’s degree. You can pursue a graduate degree part-time while you work in healthcare or go to school full-time.
  3. Get State Licensed: If your dream is to manage a nursing care facility or assisted living center, you may need a license depending on where you live.
  4. Consider Professional Certification: Although 100% voluntary, taking the time to get certified by an organization like the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) shows employers that you take your role seriously and are willing to go the extra mile to show your proficiency.
